Description

Press release from the City of Carlsbad: April 16, 2021 Cleaner energy at competitive rates Following the selection of a default energy product for Clean Energy Alliance residential and business customers, the Carlsbad City Council selected the same power supply for its city accounts and the Carlsbad Public Financing Authority and Carlsbad Municipal Water District. Known as "Clean Impact Plus," the default community choice energy power supply product will consist of 50% renewable and 75% carbon-free energy sources, a cleaner option than the 39% renewable sources offered by San Diego Gas & Electric. City facilities include: Alga Norte Community Park Carlsbad Municipal Water District offices The Crossings at Carlsbad Golf Course The Faraday Center Maerkle Reservoir Police and Fire headquarters For 2021, CEA's 50% renewable and 75% carbon-free energy mix product is estimated to reduce total emissions by 36% with an anticipated cost savings of $25,000 compared to SDG&E rates. When the CEA's community choice energy program launches on May 1, 2021, electric service customers in member communities will have access to cleaner energy, competitive rates, local programs and local control of energy resources as an alternative to SDG&E. Under the community choice energy model, SDG&E will still deliver the energy, but the alliance will purchase the power first and build in renewable energy sources for customers. Formed in October 2019, the CEA is locally controlled and supported by ratepayers, with no taxpayer subsidies. It is a separate legal entity from its member city agencies as a joint powers authority, with a separate budget from the member cities' general funds. Funded by program revenues and reserves, the CEA budget can also be redirected back into the community for various energy related programs. The CEA is also helping its member communities including the cities of Del Mar and Solana Beach, lead the way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meeting their Climate Action Plan goals.
