Long Beach Students Dismissed After Lockdown

Long Beach, NY — The Long Beach public schools were expecting a "mostly normal dismissal" hours after an active shooting situation in West Hempstead sent administrators scrambling into a lockdown. Superintendent of Schools Jennifer Gallagher said in a Facebook page,"We will be advising our walkers to go directly home, and I can tell you that there is an increased police presence all over our community." "Our bus drivers and school staff will be proceeding very carefully at dismissal," she said. Gallagher said they erred on the side of caution as "the suspect had ties to Long Beach, and is either a current or former resident." But she added, "Even though police do not believe that he is coming back to this area, they advised us to lockout our buildings as a precaution." All after-school activities were canceled. Police apprehended 30-year-old suspect Gabriel DeWitt Wilson following a four-hour manhunt. One Stop and Shop employee was killed, two other people were injured.
