Job Summary Performs duties particular to and normally required in the trade of groundskeeping, following recognized procedures and techniques for such work. Essential Functions - Mowing, watering, weeding, seeding fertilizing, refuse collection in areas assigned. - Operate power mowers and associated lawn equipment in the maintenance of hedges, shrubs, trees and lawns. - Maintain automatic sprinkler systems. - Maintain streets by patching asphalt, installing and maintaining pavers, operating jackhammers, and pouring concrete. - May drive trucks, vans, backhoe, snow plows and other heavy equipment. - Apply chemicals and fertilizers on lawns, trees and shrubs. - Perform general labor and maintenance duties in support of the Maintenance Division during off-season. Duties to include support to all maintenance trades. - Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, roadways, plazas and steps. - Perform related duties as assigned Supervision Given/Received This classification has no functional supervisory responsibility. Receives direct and general supervision from the Grounds Supervisor and/or Grounds Manager of Plant Services Minimum Qualifications - High School Diploma or GED - 3-5 years of related work experience or early career, knowledge may be from education and/or some experience - Valid driver’s license and a good driving record. - Experienced in all phases of grounds maintenance including: - knowledge of plants and turf grasses and their care - operations of power equipment related to grounds maintenance - fertilizing, renovation, and aeration - insect, weed, and disease control in lawns and plants - Experience maintaining automatic sprinkler systems. - Both written and oral communication skills. - Working-level knowledge of safety procedures related to hazardous chemicals. - Knowledge of safety standards and work practices associated with grounds keeping and general facilities maintenance and repair. - Because of the need to interact with virtually every area of campus life, must have a pleasant and customer-focused approach. - Must be able to effectively work in a group of groundkeepers and other Plant and Construction personnel. - The ability to work with people of diverse personalities, education, and cultural background is important. - Ability to work early morning hours and weekends. - Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical Physical Demands - These physical and environmental demands are considered essential to completing the essential functions. - Able to bend, stoop, and lift. Average physical strength is required for lifting heavy objects. Must be able to lift 50 pounds regularly and 100 pounds occasionally. - Must be in good general health, able to withstand inclement weather. - Must not show allergic reaction to chemical substances and common environmental factors associated with grounds keeping. - Capable of working at heights. - Ability to be mobile campus-wide for appropriate business needs.
