Fox News has done immense damage in its 20+ years. People have had to watch some of their family and friends unhinge from reality, while the network tweaks their most ridiculous and improbable fears. They become irrational and hateful towards threats that aren't there, painting those who disagree as mortal enemies. It’s an addiction to these people, and they need their supply of hourly adrenaline rushes with nightly outrage. The hosts know this, and they've made a conscious effort to breed wild conspiracy theories (remember Barack and Michelle's "terrorist fist bump"?) A couple of years ago, it finally bled over into actually hurting innocent people, so much so that our country was universally condemned by our allies, the Pope, AND even the Ayatollah Khamenei. That's right. The Pope and the Ayatollah were unified in moral outrage against us. The weakest most desperate people on earth came to us for help, and we brutalized and tormented them. And Fox News, sensing a PR disaster, is desperately pushing every lever to mitigate the damage (for instance, Laura Ingraham comparing child detention centers to "summer camps"). This has to be the breaking point for decent people. We have to start treating them as what they have become. Addicts. We can talk to them. Plead with them to change. But the course is almost always the same. Addicts have to hit bottom, and if last week wasn't rock bottom for them, then its time for an intervention. If we don't want them to continue this awful spiral downward before leaving the world as tightly wound balls of fear and hatred, then consider your ultimatum as a loving act: Seek the help you badly need (meaning, turn off Fox News forever, reclaim your grip on reality, your sense of right and wrong, and learn to love the world again) or forfeit the relationship. If you do, you can feel comforted with the knowledge that you're doing it because you love them, for their emotional (and physical) well-being, as well as the hope that repudiating the way Fox News manipulates the older brain for market share and money will force them to become better participants of public discourse. And if they choose Fox News, you knew were you stood all along. But this can't continue. We all know it.
