Any knowledgeable boat people around?

Good morning All, My name is Kenny and I just acquired a free 1984 15' seaswirl. It is all intact but has a bad starter and the relays that control the trim are not working. It has a trolling motor and I took the boat in the Sacramento River to ensure that it doesn't leak, and all went well. Now I want to get the motor going. The previous owner used it this year and said that if I repair those two things that it will be ready to go. The problem is that I have never owned a boat and have a very minor understanding of the working parts of a boat. Fortunately I am very mechanically inclined and should have all needed tools. I am looking for someone to help me get to know the workings of my boat and instruct me on what needs to be repaired.
