"The republicans and only the republicans voted with LBJ for the Civ...."
What the ever livin' hell are you talking about? Final vote for the '64 civil rights act was: 290–130 in the House of Representatives and 73–27 in the Senate, ultimately filibuster proof majority even at the time, when 2/3rds majority was needed. The civil rights bill had very broad bipartisan support. I'm talking about the not-instantaneous, but unmistakable shift during and after the civil rights movement. KKK and the voting base that aligned with the democrats, stopped supporting democrats and started supporting repubs after the civil rights era - that happened, and it's verifiable if you know how to read. Who's revising history here?
I'll concede that Robert Byrd, a "democrat", is infamous for filibustering the civil rights act. But Byrd was never a liberal - he was a conservative democrat - what used to be a thing, before the party shifts. He strongly opposed other socially liberal policy throughout his career - LGBT rights, for instance.
All I'm hearing from the responders to my post is "dem bad, repub good". I never liked Biden either - where did I say I that I did? Fuckin' hell, political parties don't have a soul or conscious. They are not good or bad. They are made up of many, often flawed humans and are influenced by donors and voting bases. There isn't some broad conspiracy by democrats, "the bad guys", to suppress repubs, "the good guys". People telling me to "use that thing under my hair" are denying that their mindless party acceptance or rejection - name only - policy specifics be damned - team-sports politics attitude, and lack of any semblance of nuance is a problem that's causing meaningless fighting and tearing this country apart.
