Live on site in beautiful, open high desert environment at newly formed eco-ranch and ethnobotany center just outside Bisbee, Arizona. Survival skills, wayfinding, plant ID, wildcraft, foraging, and indigenous Southwest/ancestral human food practices the primary focus of this residency. Basic tent accommodation, all learning materials, and vegan meals provided. Spring and summer programming may include learning how to mill mesquite flour, working with native elderberry and sumac, propagating cacti, harvesting and processing mountain raspberries and stone fruit, and doing other work with wild growing plants and herbs. Hikes in the local area to pick up navigation and plant and animal identification skills. Some light permaculture, earth and eco building projects may also be included. In your spare time, explore wonderful, quirky Bisbee, Arizona’s only artists’ colony, the borderlands, the Chiricahua, Huachuca and Mule mountain ranges, old mines, hot springs, two national monuments and three wildlife refuges, and the thousands of acres of open desert land and mountains surrounding the ranch. New Mexico, as well as Sonora, Mexico are only 20-30min away. 1 month residency, basic tent setup and 3 daily vegan meals, is $1000. Shorter or longer stays possible. Summer temps can reach 105F (programming will be in morning or evening to avoid peak heat) Learning will be 1-on-1, or in very small groups. The program lead is a wilderness survival expert with over 10 years in wild foods experience.
