Wilderness First Responder (WFR) takes place at Earlham June 1-9 Wilderness First Responder (WFR) takes place at Earlham June 1-9 and is taught by Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities (SOLO), a globally recognized wilderness medicine school. The shorter Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course is available on May 11-12 and serves as a recertification course for previous SOLO WFR participants. Please note: This WFA course will only serve as a recertification course for participants who were previously certified by SOLO (NOT another company) for WFR.WFR is an industry-standard, internationally recognized First Aid certification. The immersive 9 days (80 hrs) course is perfect for anyone working in a position of leadership in an outdoor setting, or for individuals who want a high level of wilderness medical training for extended personal backcountry trips or expeditions. Participants will learn systems for patient assessment, extended care (including CPR), and rescue/evacuation in remote settings. WFA is a 16-hour introduction to first aid and long-term patient care. The curriculum includes patient assessment and protocols covering a wide range of wilderness medicine topics. This course is ideal for camp counselors, trip leaders and anyone spending significant amounts of time in wilderness settings. The course may be used as WFR recertification for holders of current WFR cards from SOLO, WMA, or WMI. CPR training is also included. FAQs Are there any pre-requisites for this course? No prior experience is necessary, however, if you are recertifying please bring your existing WFR certification card.   What can I bring into the event? The course will have some classroom-based sessions interspersed with extended outdoor scenarios. These will take place rain or shine, so be prepared for the elements! Recommended personal gear to bring:  Raingear/wind layer tops and bottoms  Layers of clothing (so you can take a layer off if you are hot/put one on if you are cold and also to use in the building of splints Hat - warm, not made of cotton Mitten or gloves if it will be cold out Backpack to put everything in Water bottles (1qt or 1 liter) for drinking water  Footwear for the environment (close-toed shoes for being outdoors/sandals are OK for inside) What about meals and lodging? Off-campus participants are responsible for their own meals and lodging. Some campus dining facilities and housing will be open and available to all participants during the course. There are also several restaurants and a supermarket within walking distance of the venue. Earlham students needing accommodation should make arrangements through Residence Life during the Spring Semester. Cancellations submitted in writing before April 20 are eligible for a refund, subject to a 20% processing fee. On or after April 20, there will be no refunds.
