Hello there!! 👋 PICTURE FOR ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🦔❤️ Get ready for a good reading! Lol 😂 So i decided to make a post to teach a bit of good hedgie care!! So they're big bug eaters, so you can give them pinkies, wax worms (they are the french fries of bug world so should be only treats), crickets, dubia roaches, butter worms, hornworms, bfsl (Black fly soldier lavae), superworms, i dont really recommend meal worms and there are a lot more bugs they can eat. You are also going to want a good high quality cat food. I've seen people mix in four types of cat foods. (See pictures). You will also need a good size wheel not caged and not with holes because they can rip off a nail or worse! Definitely don't want that!! A lot of people use the Carolina storm wheel, but it's pretty pricey. $15+ $15 shipping. I got mine at PetSmart the "all living things" brand. They have a huge one! You're going to need three types of bowls one for water, food and one for her bugs. I would actually take advantage of the bug feeding process and use it as a bonding experience. They can get dry skin really fast so you should not bathe them often but at least once or twice a month and use Aveeno baby wash oatmeal not shampoo. With a soft toothbrush or baby brush. Also feet baths with warm warm and oatmeal in a sock. Wait till water is milky this will help shooth with quilling and itchiness. (Quilling is when they get new quills just like when babys teeth. itll happen two or three times while maturing). If they do happen to get dry skin you can use fish oil capsules and work from the inside out with 2-3 drops in their food every other day. Also be very aware that they can get mites from woods, bedding, other animals, toys, etc. Freeze everthing for 24H before use!!! Her quills will feel like pine needles depending how old they may be, but sometime people never get use to them, my girl is 13 1/2 weeks old and her quills are still pretty pointy but I'm getting used to them. I suggest no gloves while handling them so they get use to your touch. Also adding a used t-shirt in their enclosure to get them use to your smell. i also suggest to not use any scented soaps, creams etc before handling them. Tasty smells may cause biting. You will need a lot of hiding places and tunnels. I suggested getting some fleece for liners, toys, bedding etc. I paid 5.77 at walmart I believe. I cut strips out of the fleece to put in for my girl to borrow in, it's just fun to them and plus it's warm. I use a 200q tote as her enclosure! You will also need a lamp the light bulb should be a ceramic heating emitter. At least a 100 Watts. Make sure your lamp supports the Watts. If temperature drops less than 70 they can try to hibernate and can be fatal. You will need a thermostat to regulate the temperature! They poop A LOT and I mean A LOT. I use kitty litter box for underneath my girls wheel. Our hedgies can be trained to use the restroom inside the kitty litter. If you place their poop inside the litter box they will start smelling and realizing where they should be going. The litter box could be out of a cardboard box, cookie sheet, a pan, etc you know and instead of kitty litter you can use kaytee clean&cozy, puppy pads, or paper towels. I wouldn't get pine or Caesar theh are allergic and anything with sawdust! They also can't digest any fruits or veggies. I repeat they CAN NOT DIGEST ANY FRUITS OR VEGGIES!!!! So I'd stay clear. I would stick to bugs and kitty food. You can give them egg with no seasoning chicken, beef, turkey, duck in small amounts. Remember to interact with your hedgie every day so they get used to you. I take my baby out at least twice a day sometimes midday sometimes in the morning depending how the schedule is for myself even though she's a little grouchy she does get over it. Sing and talk to them. They will start to puffing up less good luck on your journey!!! 🥳🥳🥳🤗 Im here for questions! (No expert)
