Building a house from scratch

Hi Everyone, How difficult is it to build a house from scratch? Ofcourse not to build whole thing by myself but by hiring subcontractors / Individuals for each job instead of paying in bulk to the builder. I want to do this to save some money and use better quality materials. I really appreciate if anyone can share more information or resources to make my work easy. I will need help right from identifying right piece of land, plans, getting city approvals,preparing the padded site, foundation and all the next steps needed.
