Rehoming bird/small mammal?

Hello! We are searching for a first pet for my son. My work history is in the veterinary field and I am familiar with small animal/avian care. I am looking to take in a pet who just needs extra time and love. We are home full time and can provide that care and love! We want to check out a rehoming vs a pet store so we can be familiar with the pets personality. Looking for a pet who would love to be out and handled. Hamster, rat, guinea pig, small bird... we are open! Very familiar with caring for all.. including free flight house training for small birds. We are more interested in the right personality than species. We will get whatever we need to for the right animal. You know your pet best, would they enjoy gentle daily monitored interaction with a young boy? He has had experience with birds, and small mammals. We currently have two senior dogs which are very fragile. We are hoping to get him a pet he can enjoy and grow with! Thank you in advance.
