Description
FREE (Safe and Socially Distanced) Children's River and Sky (Fishing and Bird Watching) Day The Friends of Penn Treaty Park will be hosting a day of fun, connection, and learning at our FREE (Safe and Socially Distanced) Children's River and Sky (Fishing and Bird Watching) Day in partnership with and as an event as a part of the Philadelphia City Nature Challenge (cncphilly.org), and in collaboration with Philly Nature (phillynature.org) on Saturday, 1 May, from 8:00 - 9:30 am and again during a second session from 10:00 - 11:30 am. You may choose to join one session for Fishing and another for learning to BirdWatch alongside the incomparable Bernard “Billy” Brown, co-host of the Philly-based Urban Wildlife Podcast, urban natural history writer for Grid Magazine, and the Philadelphia coordinator for the Pennsylvania Amphibian and Reptile Survey, a state-backed citizen science effort to catalog Pennsylvania’s reptiles and amphibians. You may also choose to participate in both sessions for one interest. Attendance at this event will be through registration only. We will keep the number of total people present, including volunteers and adult chaperones, to under 25 participants per session. As always, the Friends of Penn Treaty Park will be providing FREE fishing rods and tackle/boxes and a set of binoculars for the children to keep and take home with them when finished. This day will not be a derby as in years past, though we plan to get back to derby competitions when it is safer to do so. Instead, this day will be an enjoyable celebration of our connection to the Delaware River and the sky above. It will be an opportunity to learn about nature and the wildlife surrounding us and participate in Citizen Science. We will recognize any fish caught and first-time junior anglers’ achievements as they cast off on perhaps a new hobby and hope to increase the number of new animals observed for the City Nature Challenge as we learn to identify birds. Please email [email protected] for any questions or thoughts, and if you know of anyone who would love to help mentor any of our participants through example, or to help, socially distanced, with the ever needed stringing of hooks, baiting, etc., please do reach out as well. We require that everyone wear a mask and recommend that everyone bring sanitizer or soap and water if preferred and drinking water to stay hydrated. We are looking forward to connecting with nature and the water on this fun upcoming day.
