Hello! My name is Annie! I am interested in using my classical education and love of teaching to assist in the educational needs of a child or small group of children during this uncertain time. I spent the last year successfully supporting a group of elementary students through distance learning. I have also tutored special education and 2e students. I am a third generation University of Portland Alumna. Throughout my extensive post secondary education, I have had the opportunity to study an array of subjects with a focus in the sciences. This includes a BS in biology from UP, where I studied, researched, and assisted in the instruction of microbiology, cell and molecular biology, and genetics. I am a published author in the field of medical genetics and cellular biology. I have had coursework in philosophy, mathematics, French, literature, fine arts (theoretical and performing-10+ years of ballet and dance, vocal performance, theatrical production, band and orchestra), physics, English composition, chemistry, history, computer science, music, and many more. I enjoyed teaching microbiology and genetics during my graduate work at The University of Hawaii Manoa, after which I returned to academics at the University of Portland. During my time in Florida, I engaged in midwifery studies and nursing school, where I was able to serve families and clients during some of their most stressful and joyous times. Being an effective educator was absolutely crucial to this role. I have also had the pleasure of assisting, tutoring, teaching and coordinating the learning process throughout my time in academia. I love making learning a game and an experience instead of a chore. I have been supplementing my child since conventional classroom learning became unavailable and see the clear need for hands on learning, in addition to an online curriculum. I focus on experience-based learning, utilizing projects which lend themselves to fulfilling a child’s natural curiosity for figuring out how things work. I utilize the Socratic method of conversational based inquiry to facilitate children’s development of knowledge and critical thinking.
