READING, MA — A fire tore through the construction site of the clubhouse at the Meadow Brook Golf Club Tuesday, almost exactly one year after a blaze destroyed the original building. The club's board of governors said Tuesday they were "heartbroken" over the loss of the new clubhouse, which was expected to open in mid-June. There were no damages beyond the clubhouse area, and no construction workers or club employees were at the site when the fire broke out, the board said. "We want to send our profound thanks to the Reading Fire Department and first responders from Reading and surrounding towns who worked so hard to minimize the spread," said the board. The fire was reported shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday, according to a Facebook post from the Reading Police Department. It reached three alarms before being declared under control around 9 a.m., the Reading firefighters' union said. The original clubhouse, which housed the dining room, function hall, bar, offices and locker rooms for more than 75 years, burned down in an electrical fire on April 17, 2020. The cause of Tuesday's fire remains under investigation. The board said it is "currently working with authorities to gather information and will update membership when we know more."
