Come Build at IMAN Ceramic Studio, Every Thursday in Ramadan 2 to 4. April 15 to May 6!
Through the ceramic art of hand building, our course objective is to facilitate an understanding of Persevering through Truth and Patience, and discuss ways in which art and the making of art can be therapeutic and connect us to a community and our own truths.
IMAN embraces holistic health through creative expression, to promote wellness and healing. During this course, both functional and sculptural ceramic traditions will be explored. We will discuss the history of ceramics, and the nature and origin of clay. This course is intended for those interested in creating a clay pieces from start to finish.
Classes will be Co-lead by: Heather McQueen, an accomplished ceramic artist, working primarily in the low-fire range. Her work varies from drums and sculptural vessels to utilitarian, country-style tableware.
Guest Speakers include:
April 15: Rameya Shanmugavelayutham: Behavioral Health Specialist at IMAN. Discussion will revolve around our own truths and persevering through the process. We will be making sculptural items, and enjoying the process of creating art from Earth
April 22: Eliza Karaza: Painter, Artist. Discussion will revolve around Art in the diaspora, our identities, and the truths of our narratives. We will be making functional ceramic pieces and exploring our identities through clay.
April 29: Amirah Sackett: dancer choreographer, educator, activist. Discussion will revolve around movement and patience. We will be making sculptural pieces with functional parts.
May 6: Manal Mirza: illustrator. Discussion will revolve around illustration and the process of art and persevering in the current landscape. We will be making either functional or sculptural ceramic pieces.
