Press release from Rockland Community College: April 12, 2021 Rockland Community College has an exciting schedule planned for April to celebrate Asian Pacific Islander Heritage, Haitian Heritage, and Disability Awareness. The college has created a wide variety of activities and virtual programs to appeal to students and their families, faculty, and staff. All events are free and open to the public. Each year, the Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration runs from the second week of April to the first week of May. There will be a student panel discussion titled "Our Voices: Asian and Pacific Islander Student Perspectives," a Haiku writing workshop, a book chat on "Monstress Vol. 1: Awakening" by Marjorie Liu, along with three documentary films: "The People's Republic of Desire," "1882 Chinese Exclusion Act" and "Injustice at Home: Looking Like the Enemy" about the Japanese internment camps.For more information: https://sunyrockland.edu/about/media/asian-pacific-islander-heritage In 1990, Haitian Day was a one-day event. Since then, it has grown to a month of festivities. While May is known as Haitian Heritage Month, RCC has opted to celebrate in April as the spring semester ends mid-May. Events include Haitian cooking demonstrations with Chef Michelle Timothee of La Talaye Catering and Chef Nadia Joseph of La Baguette D'Or and Bistro, The History of Haitian Pop Music, Undiscovered Haiti with Jose Andres along with discussions on law and mental health. It also serves to educate students of their rights and responsibilities, as well as work to strengthen inclusive attitudes across the campus community.
