GREENBELT, MD — Anjan Ghosh Tagore, of Silver Spring, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison Thursday followed by a lifetime supervised release for the receipt of child pornography, and he was given an additional 18 months for violating his supervised release from a previous federal conviction for possession of child pornography. The sentences, which were announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office District of Maryland, are to be served consecutively. U.S. District Judge Peter J. Messitte imposed the sentence and also ordered Tagore, 48, to forfeit his electronic devices and pay $3,000 in restitution to a child pornography victim. Upon his release from prison, Tagore must also continue to register as a sex offender where he resides, works or is a student. According to a release, in February 2019, The U.S. Probation Office was alerted by monitoring software that Tagore had searched for images of "naked/nude/preteen" children on his desktop computer. Tagore later admitted to viewing the material. In April of 2019, Montgomery County Police contacted U.S. Probation about a complaint that Tagore had been using a computer at a library in Montgomery County to view nude images of children. Under Tagore's previous probation, he was not authorized to use a computer or the internet, and searching for or viewing images of nude children was a violation of the rules of his sex offender treatment program. Additionally, Tagore was required to report any questioning by police, which he failed to do. Eventually, Tagore was ordered to turn over several USB drives and Micro SD cards, which he was not legally allowed to possess. A search warrant was executed on the digital media and revealed 105 video files depicting child pornography, including prepubescent children, at least one of which was an infant or toddler. According to previous reports, Tagore pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography in 2007, and also was sentenced by Judge Messitte in that case. As far back as 1996, Tagore pleaded guilty in an Oklahoma City federal court to taking part in an internet child pornography ring.
