UPMC, Allegheny Health Network Halt Johnson & Johnson Vaccines

PITTSBURGH, PA — Southwestern Pennsylvania's two largest medical providers, UPMC and the Allegheny Health Network, have paused the use of the Janssen Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine. The moves come after the Food & Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended a halt after six cases of serious side effects were reported. UPMC said in a news release that it remains committed to making COVID-19 vaccine available and accessible. This week's drive-up clinic at Pittsburgh Mills scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday will proceed using a supply of the Pfizer vaccine for people with appointments. Six cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot have been reported out of 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that have been administered. Today FDA and @CDCgov issued a statement regarding the Johnson & Johnson #COVID19 vaccine.
