Culver City Crossroads April 12, 2021 While many cities have already approved of 'hero pay,' the pandemic bonus for frontline hospital workers, grocery store employees and retail workers will be the first action item on the agenda this evening, April 12, 2021 at 7 pm. The Culver City Council has heard several times from workers at Southern California Hospital about substandard working conditions there, including broken pipes leaking water through the building and mold growing walls. That the conditions at the hedge fund owned hospital are making an already difficult job dangerous is without dispute. The many local grocery stores – Ralph's, Vons, Pavilions, Sprouts and Trader Joe's – have all offered responses to the crisis from limiting the number of people in the store to requiring masks, but bonus pay happened only for some, and for a very limited amount of time. Putting this important factor back into focus as a benefit for essential workers will bring Culver City into alignment with other California cities that have already instituted the policy. Housing policy, recently on the agenda for the General Plan Update, will also be on this evening's agenda. The 'guiding principles for a 2021-2029' housing policy is being driven by the state of California's AB 725. This requires that housing policy be updated, and the city must legalize "sites zoned to accommodate at least four on-site multi-family housing units."
