How to make a car gas efficient?

I'm wondering from any engineering and mechanical minds out there...I have a 2008 subaru forester, and I commute 2 hours a day. Is there a way to make this car hybrid...or are there things I should update in it first to make my car a better commuter. I don't want to inhibit it's driving capability, and I don't want a different car (I like this one, she my baby). If there is a better place to post this question, let me know!
