Braille Nonprofit Seeking Board Members
Jobs
2791 24th St. Room 8, Sacramento CA
Description
We are looking to add two more Directors who ideally live in Northern California. We look forward to hearing from you. Sacramento Braille Transcribers, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is passionate about producing high quality, affordable braille. Sacramento Braille Transcribers, Inc. (SBT) transcribes and produces a wide variety of projects into braille, from textbooks to menus, from newsletters to picture books for the blind. Braille is very relevant, even in the digital age. Without literacy a person wouldn’t know how to spell or how to use proper grammar or punctuation. Shockingly only 1 out of 10 Americans who are blind can read braille. There is a shortage of easily accessible, affordable, high quality braille in the USA. SBT wants to broaden its reach by producing even more braille material, so that the blind can lead independent lives and so that we can create more jobs in the field of braille production. SBT has been around for the past 63 years, but we are in an exciting phase of going digital: we recently switched to a paperless office, we now use cloud-based software and file storage, and we are in the process of creating our first website. Even though we’ve been around for decades, we have the zest of a start-up, because we are renovating how we do business. One big change is that we are switching from being 100% volunteer run to paying our braille transcribers for their skills and expertise. These big changes require input from knowledgeable and experienced Board members like you. If you have a passion for marketing, fundraising, employment law, nonprofit law, or experience in CIO/IT setup, then we would love to hear from you. Knowledge of braille is not required, but we would love for you to have an interest in learning about the braille industry.
