ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Last week, Anne Arundel County had its highest seven-day inoculation total ever. More than a fifth of county residents are fully immunized. About a third have gotten at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. This progress led Anne Arundel to close preregistration for the shot and instead open appointments for direct scheduling. Anybody 16 or older can now get the inoculation at providers across the state. Maryland expects this growing rollout to temporarily slow down, however. Complications with the Johnson & Johnson immunization delayed shipments for the next few weeks. The state mainly uses the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, so this won't derail the rollout, but the pace may diminish slightly. Gov. Larry Hogan hopes to restore full capacity next month. Infections are still slowly rising, and the county passed 40,000 total cases last week. New infections and hospitalizations are the highest they have been since February. The positivity rate is at its steepest clip since January. This spike led three local high schools to cancel the rest of their varsity football seasons. Last week's 911 cases are up four from the week prior. It was the 10th straight week that Anne Arundel recorded less than 1,000 new infections. Before that, the county had clocked more than 1,000 new cases per week for about three consecutive months. The virus also killed five county residents last week, which is four fewer than the week before, the Maryland Department of Health said.
