Description

A public festival for people to experience and understand Japan and its culture Though Mississippi is home to Japanese industry and restaurants, by and large, the state lacks a significant portion of access to Japanese culture, language and ideals. Through the Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI) program, the Jackson, Mississippi area has had the opportunity to learn more about the language and culture with the assigned JOI coordinator. The JOI coordinator's efforts in the state have led to Mississippians taking several levels of Japanese language courses, several school and church presentations on Japanese culture, and a Japanese presence at the Jackson State University Global Office and JSU Anime Club. However, compared with other states, like Louisiana, Tennessee next to Mississippi, most community members still do not have the opportunity to experience a Japan-related event. The JOI coordinator would like to expand his reach by hosting a large-scale event to highlight Japanese culture at a one-time event for the community members of churches, schools, and companies who have not experienced Japanese culture in collaboration with Jackson State University and community members. The festival provides various hands-on experiences such as games, dance, music and foods to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture. This event is the very first large-scale Japan-related festival at Jackson, Mississippi.
