PLAINFIELD, IL — The Plainfield Police Department will take part in a national initiative to prevent the abuse and overuse of prescription drugs with a local effort that allows residents to return unused and unwanted medications from their medicine cabinets. Local police, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency, will conduct the take-back event from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. on April 24. The event allows residents to return pharmaceutical controlled substances and other items to law enforcement for proper disposal on a no questions asked basis. The event will take place at the Plainfield Law Enforcement Center, located at 14300 S. Coil Plus Dr. The Plainfield Police Department will act as a host collection site and the event will be conducted using COVID-19 protocols. Controlled, non-controlled, and over the counter substances will be collected as part of the national initiative. This event is for patients and their families to dispose of unwanted medications. Pharmacies, hospitals, and physicians are not permitted drop off their excess medications for disposal, officials said. Any solid dosage form pharmaceutical products such tablets and capsules in consumer containers may be accepted. Small pint size bottles of cough syrups may be accepted if they are sealed in their original container. The depositor should ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage. Illicit illegal substances such as marijuana and heroin are not part of the event and needles will not be accepted.
