PHILADELPHIA — First degree murder charges have been refiled against a man for the shooting death of a transgender woman last year.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced the charges have been refiled against Abdullah I. El-Amin, 38, for the shooting death of Mia Green, a Black trans woman, last September.
During a preliminary hearing on April 7, the Philadelphia Municipal Court downgraded the murder charge to third-degree murder over Commonwealth objections.
"While the matter remains an active and open investigation, facts and evidence known to the Commonwealth at this time support our initial decision to charge this case as First Degree Murder," Krasner said. "My office will continue to seek justice on the Commonwealth's behalf for the murder of Mia Green, who should be alive and with her loved ones today."
On Sept. 28, 2020, Philadelphia Police officers stopped El-Amin while he was driving at the 900 block of N. 41st Street for a traffic violation.
Green was in the passenger seat of the car suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She died from several close-range gunshots, according to a medical examination. Investigation by police and the DAO Homicide/Non-Fatal Shooting Unit determined there were inconsistencies in the account El-Amin initially gave to law enforcement.
El-Amin is additionally charged with possession of an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person, unsworn falsification to authorities, tampering with evidence, and obstruction of justice.
