Press release from the City of Millbrae: April 10, 2021 Construction is well underway in building the new Millbrae Recreation Center. Since the October 2020 groundbreaking ceremony, site demolition, foundation pad preparation, rough grading, construction staking, and utility installation have all been completed. Currently, the structural foundation rebar has been installed, and the site is being prepared to pour the concrete foundation. While high moisture levels in the soil and coordination of utility installation with PG&E have caused some minor delays, the project continues to stay on schedule for a Spring 2022 grand opening. The foundation was poured in two phases and completed on April 7th and on April 9th. After the foundation is set, the builder (Blach Construction) will move forward to prepare the site and start build the steel structure. This will be an exciting time for the project as the community will be able to see the structure of the building start coming together. This work is expected to be completed by the end of June 2021. After the skeletal frame of the Recreation Center is complete, the builder will move forward with exterior construction and finishes, which are expected to be complete by the end of December 2021. Following the completion of exterior work, the builder will move inside to complete interior projects such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, painting, and finishing. As this is a design-build contract, Blach Construction has partnered with ELS Architecture (the designer) to design the final exterior and interior look of the Recreation Center. As the builder finishes the foundation and building structure, the designer is focusing their efforts on design changes and getting approval on the final layout of exterior and interior building materials, site landscaping and hardscaping, and the Center's low voltage system. To date, the construction of the new 24,000 square foot Millbrae Recreation Center is 20% complete. The City will provide further updates as construction milestones are completed.
