Multiple Swimmers Rescued From Rip Current By Ocean Lifeguards

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA —Ocean lifeguards in Manhattan Beach rescued eight swimmers Friday afternoon after they were swept off of a shallow sandbar in the El Porto area. The incident took place at 1:30 p.m. View this post on Instagram A post shared by LACoFD Lifeguard Division (@lacolifeguards) "The swimmers weren't able to touch the ocean floor and were pushed further offshore, "Ocean Lifeguard specialist at LA County Fire Department Pono Barnes told Patch. Rip currents create shallow sand bars with deep inshore holes adjacent to them. "This condition is characteristic of springtime ocean conditions in Los Angeles County," Barnes said. "It was very fortunate that our lifeguards are well trained and were able to save them." Initially, three lifeguards swam out for the rescue, according to Barnes. Additional rescue teams provided assistance as did helpful surfers in the area. No injuries were reported. Barnes advises all beach-goers to set up next to an open lifeguard station. "Always check with the lifeguard on-duty and ask about the conditions," he said. "They are our marine environment specialist and will direct you where to swim, surf, or bodyboard safely."
