DARIEN, IL — Darien saw another higher increase in the rate of new coronavirus cases in the last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, Darien had a total of 1,615 coronavirus cases, up 40 from a week before, or a 2.5 percent increase. The previous week, the city saw a 1.5 percent increase in cases. The city's number of coronavirus deaths stayed the same in the last week, at 19. That works out to less than a thousandth of Darien's population. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 2.1 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload. As of Sunday, Darien had 74.7 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning, better than its neighbors. The figure compares to 77 in La Grange Park, 82.8 in Western Springs, 84.7 in DuPage County, 84.8 in Hinsdale, 87.7 in Elmhurst, 93.1 in suburban Cook County, 93.7 in Clarendon Hills, 98.2 in Burr Ridge and 107.6 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,279,772, up 2 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 21,505 state residents. Nationally, 30.9 million people have caught the virus, up 1.5 percent from the week before. A total of 558,028 people have died from the virus in the United States.
