Description

How our medicinal plant allies can guide & support us through each seasons challenges. As Walther Gardens gears up to offer more diverse herbal plant medicine options for our home gardens, owners, Paula & Matthew have teamed up with clinical herbalist Alyssa Dennis, of Eclipta Herbal, to offer a series of workshops, on the second Saturday of every month, that will engage the participant in the edible and medicinal attributes of each plant whether through making a tea, a pesto, a salve, a tincture, a candle, an infused oil, a drawing or flower pressing. Each month will focus on one to two plants as they correspond to appropriate harvest and preparation times throughout the calendar year. We will discuss important markings within the herbal compass, where and in what conditions each plant grows best, plant ID, medicinal properties and cross-cultural histories. There are many ways in which we use a calendar; to schedule meetings, doctors appointments, birthdays, holidays, vacations, etc. but have you ever taken pause to reflect: that a calendar is not a timeline but an ever revolving wheel? How can we navigate a deeper connection with the place we call home; the land under our feet and the body we hold...as it corresponds to the ebb & flow of life? How can the plants we choose to cultivate, harvest and prepare as food and medicine help us through each season’s challenges? Medicinal herbs offer a magnificent way to fully engage our sensory systems in the creation of our internal and external compass. For example, November is a month where we practice discernment and define boundaries before going inward for winter. Our body, mind & spirit must question; What is it that I need to let go of and where is it that I need to nourish and build? Nov. is also a time of visioning, dreaming and remembering. Our plant guides for this month will be: Astragalus which helps build healthy boundaries while nourishing and protecting. Mugwort is a gentle detox and digestive aid, that also assists in dreaming, visioning and remembering. Each participant will receive: 1. A free 5’’x7’’ designer fabric bound handmade journal for note taking, drawing, and plant pressing. 2. A color print out of Eclipta Herbal plant illustrations which can be cut out and added to your journal. 3. The opportunity to taste or experience our monthly food or medicine preparation such as tea, tincture, pesto, infused oil, candle making, etc. (this will change month to month).
