From the City of Birmingham: April 9, 2021 The City of Birmingham's mask ordinance extending beyond the current state mandate is in effect through May 24, 2021. The Birmingham City Council approved the ordinance Tuesday. "I'm grateful to the Birmingham City Council for taking this action," Mayor Randall L. Woodfin said. "We're doing this because the pandemic still exists and remains a threat. I have been encouraged by many small businesses to extend the mandate beyond the expiration date of the state order. A majority of residents in the city have not been vaccinated. We will continue to consult our health leaders to make the right decisions to keep our residents safe." The ordinance requires an individual to wear a mask when in public places and in close contact with other people. Specifically, an individual should wear a mask – particularly indoors – when they are within six feet of a person from another household. There are several categories for exceptions. Children under 6 are not required to wear a mask. Face coverings or masks are not required during individual outdoor exercise, for people with certain medical conditions or disabilities, eating and drinking, medical and dental procedures, and so on.
