Anyone want to help a surf fishing noob with some info?

Any expert anglers here that could give me a bit of info? Have lived in the city since 2015 with the goal of living at croatan beach. As of May 18, that dream becomes a reality! Here's the thing - I love fishing and want to surf fish on croatan. The problem is that I own no gear nor have any idea how to do it? Anyone willing to message me some info? What gear do I need? How do I even do it? To me I don't see how it goes out far enough to where any fish is! I swim in the ocean and don't feel like fish are swimming around my feet! Anyway, I'd be immensely grateful for any expert advice. Google has a lot of resources but im not really understanding it cuz it isn't in layman's terms. Thank you!
