QUEER DISABLED PERSON SEEKS WORKERS

Jobs

Milwaukee WI

Description

My name is E and I’m a nonbinary Disabled person living in the downtown Milwaukee/Walker’s Point area. I’m seeking a few personal care assistants to add to my team! I need assistance with most aspects of my personal care, cooking, household chores, taking care of my pug puppy, driving me in my accessible vehicle, and other various tasks in order for me to live my life independently. No experience is necessary, and in fact, it’s preferred as assisting a disabled person is extremely individualized. I will train. Queer and trans people are encouraged to apply. More about me: I’m a full-time freelance writer. My life is a mix of routine and spontaneity, so unlike a 9-5 business, working for me can look different from day to day. Before the pandemic I enjoyed going out and being involved in various local scenes, though now my idea of a wild day is taking my dog to the park. I enjoy conversations on radical politics, as well as trash TV and astrology. My assistants are essentially my hands and feet, so if you ever dreamed of being a limb to someone, this is your chance. Prior caregiving experience is acceptable but not necessary, only the ability to learn quickly and follow directions. Many of my assistants have never worked in healthcare but have a can-do attitude. Training is provided. This is a limited part-time position as shifts can vary week by week. It’s a great job to fit between other obligations. Flexible schedules are preferred, but I may be able to coordinate around your schedule. Currently, I am looking to fill two positions for a mixture of morning shifts, overnight shifts, and weekend shifts. Morning shifts are roughly 3 hours long. Overnights are set at $80/night, and mostly involve sleeping, while occasionally helping me reposition 1-2 times or assisting with other needs as they come up. This is the perfect gig for a trustworthy individual who is laid back but also can be attentive when necessary. You’re likely a great fit if… -- You are queer, trans, or an ally who hates performative allyship -- You have a decent understanding of ableism and/or are eager to learn about anti-ableism -- You have strong communication skills and can follow directions -- You’re punctual, reliable, and dependable -- You’re comfortable with learning to assist someone in personal care -- You’re willing to learn how to assist me in physical transfers -- You don’t have healthcare experience, or if you do, you have a general understanding of ableism in the medical field -- You don’t smoke cigarettes -- You have reliable transportation and a valid drivers license -- You love pets (especially dogs!) Other requirements via the government: -- Must be able to pass a background check -- Must have a Social Security Card and valid I.D. -- Must have an active checking account As you can probably tell, this is not your typical personal care assistant job, but if you feel you would be a good fit, please email E a paragraph about yourself, why you’re a good fit, and what hours you would be available by replying to this ad. All applications without these requirements will not be considered, as I’ve decided you didn’t read this far. Bonus points: tell me what you know about ableism and your astrological signs. I look forward to hearing from you!
