Riverwood Students Win 2021 Japan Academic Challenge

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Riverwood International Charter School students Luke Morneweck and Rebecca Mier won first place in the Level 2 competition at the 2021 Japan Academic Challenge held virtually on March 20. The Japan-America Society of Georgia hosted numerous high school students from across the southeast for the challenge. Students in the Level 2 competition are enrolled in second year high school-level Japanese language study. The competition included challenges in the Japanese language, business and economics, current events, geography, history, politics, and traditional, modern, and popular culture. To compete, contestants have not lived in Japan for more than three months and come from homes where Japanese is not spoken regularly. Three Riverwood students also placed third in the Level 3 competition: Duncan Link, Kimberly Connor, and Jonah Hirsch. Students in Level 3 are in their third year of high school-level Japanese language study. Riverwood students' performance continues the long-running tradition of excellence in Japanese language teaching and study at the school, where students perform well at the Japan-America Society of Georgia competition annually.
