NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The hard work of volunteers in October of last year is paying off in a beautiful way on the New Rochelle High School campus. Thousands of new spring tulip blooms in school colors are offering a temporary, but recurring tribute to the graduating class of 2020. The graduates missed out on many of the traditional events and rites of passage for seniors because of emergency coronavirus restrictions last year. The springtime displays of nature's elegance are intended to pay homage to these pandemic-disrupted alumni for years to come. SEE ALSO: Volunteers Plant 2,020 Tulip Bulbs At New Rochelle High School Now, the tulips planted in 2020 have finally arrived and are in bloom. Students returning from spring break were greeted by the wonders of nature in purple and white. The 2,020 purple prince and white prince tulips were donated by Tom and Ally Gallin, parents of a member of the class of 2020. Amy Galin is also a longtime Volunteer New York! board member. Trevor Benevento, the City School District of New Rochelle Working Grounds Foreman led a grounds team in clearing the beds and preparing the soil. Volunteer New York! put out a call for volunteers for the special community service project. Horticultural expert Kelly Meringolo guided the volunteers in proper planting of the bulbs. The results are spectacular and on display now. With the cooperation of Mother Nature, the remarkable spring blooms will return every year from now on.
