CLEARWATER, FL — Clearwater Police detectives have charged a Largo man with carjacking and other charges in connection with a January attack on two women at Clearwater Mall. Matthew Uselton, 37, of 7994 Powderhorn Circle in Largo, faces charges of carjacking, attempted grand theft auto and fraudulent use of a credit card. The crime occurred Jan. 19 in the parking lot of Clearwater Mall when Uselton is accused of trying to carjack a woman in front of Costco, but was unsuccessful when the victim screamed and ran away. Police said he then approached a woman in the Pet Smart parking lot as she sat in the driver's seat of her car. He opened her door, pointed a knife at her and pulled her out of the car, detectives said. He then got into the driver's seat and drove away. Neither woman was injured. At the time of his booking, Usleton was in the Pinellas County Jail for another crime out of Largo that occurred shortly after the carjacking.
