Valborg – A Festival of Spring and Fire - Swedish tradition originating in the 8th century Valborg – The Festival of Spring and Fire – A Swedish tradition originating in the 8th centuryWelcome spring, May bonfires, happy birthday to Sweden’s king Carl XVI Gustaf are just a few of the traditional meanings of Valborg for most Swedes. In 2021 it also spells the dawn of post pandemic spring as life starts to blossom again. Join SACC for our second in-person event 2021 – outdoors by the bonfire at the wonderful artistic Solomon estate where, for the first time in years, we can light a bonfire to commemorate this unique moment. Bring friends and family, it will be a wonderful event. History: The Valborg tradition originated in Sweden based on a tail about a nun named Valborg whom lived in the 8th century, declared a saint on May 1, 799. After her canonization, her name was linked to the Vikings' traditional festivities welcoming of spring. Valborg is celebrated in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Germany. Majbrasa – May bonfire: Many of the traditions at Valborg, such as the lighting of fires, come from Germany, where they used to light fires to scare away the witches that evening. Lighting fires in Sweden began during the Middle Ages in eastern Sweden, while other parts of the country used to wait until mid-May with the fires. Customs: The fires were meant to scare away wolves and supernatural beings before the animals were let out to pasture for the summer, the first of May. Around the fires, people used to shoot guns, hit drums, rattle with pot lids and shout, all to scare. Nowadays firecrackers and fireworks are used instead as well as welcoming spring with song. The king's birthday: The flags are also hoisted on Valborg to commemorate Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf's birthday on April 30, a coincidence to making it even more festive. ... and an infinite other reasons to celebrate Spring and May 1st 2021! We look forward to seeing you!
