NORWALK, CT — A 23-year-old Norwalk man was arrested by Norwalk police on a warrant charging him with fraud and identity theft after police said he illegally used someone else's account information to purchase a $600 gift card.
Kason Sumpter, of San Vincenzo Place, was charged with third-degree identity theft, credit card fraud and fifth-degree larceny in connection with the December 2019 incident at The SoNo Collection.
According to police, Sumpter was an employee at an unnamed store in the mall at that time when he helped a customer open a credit card account, but he saved the customer's information and used it to purchase the gift card.
Sumpter then went to a mall in Westchester County, New York, and used the gift card to buy items at a store from the same chain where he worked, police said.
An investigation into the stolen account information led police to Sumpter, according to police. The victim's money was fully refunded, and Sumpter was fired by the store and is barred from working for the unnamed chain again, police added.
Bail information for Sumpter was not immediately available, but he is scheduled to appear in court on May 6.
