Press release from the City of San Leandro: April 8, 2021 Councilmember Corina Lopez was elected to the National League of Cities (NLC) board of directors by NLC's membership at the 2020 Virtual City Summit. Lopez was elected to a two-year term and will provide strategic direction and guidance for NLC's federal advocacy, governance, and membership activities. NLC is the largest and most representative organization for cities, their elected leaders and municipal staff, and advocates for city priorities in Washington by building solid federal-local partnerships. Upon the appointment to the board of directors, Councilmember Lopez was also named to the NLC's Legislative Action Committee. "It is an honor to represent the interests of San Leandro on the national level," stated Councilmember Lopez. "I'm determined to continue my advocacy on behalf of the community during one of the most challenging times that we have ever faced and champion our cause in all levels of government as we rebuild in a better way." As a board member, Lopez will meet with her NLC colleagues in the spring, summer, and fall to guide the organization's strategic direction. Board members are selected by a 15-member nominating committee and confirmed by a vote from NLC's membership at the organization's annual business meeting. Lopez is the first San Leandro Councilmember to serve on the National League of Cities Board of Directors. "The National League of Cities board of directors serves a critical role in guiding our organization's priorities and policies," said National League of Cities President Kathy Maness, councilmember of Lexington, South Carolina. "NLC's board of directors is a group of amazing leaders, and I look forward to working with them during an important time for the nation's cities." More than 1,000 mayors, councilmembers, and other delegates from nearly every state and the District of Columbia convened virtually for this year's City Summit. Local leaders are on the frontline of the nation's most pressing challenges and are working to pioneer innovative solutions to move the nation's cities, towns, and villages forward. In addition to this national appointment, Councilmember Lopez is an appointed member of the California League of Cities Board of Directors, which advocates for the interests of cities at the California State Capitol.
