Just so you know riding a bicycle has become a dangerous adventure since the advent of cell phones. I wouldn't be surprised if the normal commute one might make via bicycle is too dangerous so driving him to a point to start the ride that is safer makes sense.
Besides. I'm willing to bet his 2 miles are a lot more than most people are willing to do. And 2 miles stuck in a traffic jam as compared to riding a bike makes a big difference on the impact to the environment.
