Description
The community is coming together to help get the Courage Center's garden space cleaned up and ready for the kids to dig in! For those who are not familiar with what the Children's Bureau Courage Center is focused on: in short, when a child is in an abusive or neglectful home, they are taken away by DCS and sent to the Courage Center. They may need to stay here from anywhere between 30 and 90 days, until they can either be placed in a foster home or reunited with their family once it's safe to do so again. As you can only imagine, this must be a completely unsettling and traumatizing experience for our community's children, and we want to help in any way we can! To start, we would like to do so through developing a gardening program, in the hopes it’ll serve as a form of therapy while the kids work to manage their feelings and emotional growth as they process their trauma experienced. ***Can you help by donating (or coordinating donations for) any of the following for the kids?: 1. A truckload of rubber mulch to fill in around the garden beds! 2. Veggie and flower plants/starts for the kids to plant, learn about, nurture, and grow (I have a list OR what might be best is to donate a gift card to a nursery/hardware store to purchase when the time comes) 3. General gardening tools and supplies (think: watering cans, gardening gloves, shovels, clippers, rakes, tomato cages, organic fertilizer, compost bin, trelllises etc) 4. A landscaping hand – please sign up if planning to join us! 5. Topsoil for the beds (update: secured! Thank you, Brian Hall!) 6. A hand with repairing the existing raised garden beds that are falling apart (update: thank you Blake Kocher for volunteering to lead this effort!) Let me know - it’s definitely going to take a village and I would love to make this happen alongside all of you 🤍 UPDATE: Following donated items committed (THANK YOU!!): - (2) full-sized shovels, (2) full-sized rakes, a watering hose, hose head, and watering can: Heather and Matt Hunt - Garden tools and hose: Michael Worley - Some veggie plants (TBD): Jodi Banton - Outdoor tool/supply cabinet: Jeremy Ross - Gardening tools: Jordan Hollingsworth - Topsoil: Brian Hall - Lag bolts/tools to repair garden beds: Blake Kocher - Lowes gift card: Mary Slade BIGGEST NEEDS YET TO BE MET: - Rubber mulch to fill space - Gardening gloves, watering can(s) - Tomato cages & trellises - Gift cards to hardware stores - A helping hand day-of!
