Get some exercise and improve quality of life for seniors by helping us plant trees at this affordable retirement community!
Lafayette Terrace Apartments is an affordable senior housing community located in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. Englewood has a 23% canopy cover with over half of the community consisting of impervious surfaces (51%).
In partnership with WestRock and the Arbor Day Foundation, we will plant approximately 20 trees on the Lafayette Terrace grounds. By spending more time outside in tree-filled spaces, residents will experience mental and physical health benefits while strengthening community ties through socialization. Air quality will increase while temperatures and ambient noise are reduced, creating attractive, beautiful, engaging spaces for residents to enjoy. In addition to reducing the elders’ exposure to extreme heat, reduced surface temperatures can result in lower energy bills, further increasing Lafayette Terrace’s safety and affordability for this vulnerable population.
Please wear a mask, long pants, and closed toe shoes, and bring a (full) water bottle. We will take care of everything else! Volunteers will help us dig holes, plant trees, mulch, and water.
Note that masks must be worn for the duration of the project. We will limit group size and maintain social distancing for participants' health and safety.
We look forward to helping make a difference in this community, and hope that you will join us!
