Description

What's Up Prince William April 02, 2021 Two historic sites are gaining national recognition. Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and Cemetery are now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, according to a release from the Office of Communications. Standing at 15008 Lee Highway, the Gainesville locations have played an important role in "The Settlement," a community established by enslaved people who were freed. Historic districts, buildings and structures, sites, and items from across the United States can be found on the register. The Gainesville church and cemetery were added by the National Park Service (NPS) on February 19. The Virginia Board of Historic Resources listed them to the Virginia Landmarks Register on December 10. Community members can see the sites on the National Register of Historic Places on the NPS website, and the Historic African American Sites page of the Virginia Landmarks Register, which is on the Virginia Department of Historic Resources website.
