HOWARD COUNTY, MD — As of April 7, 123,496 (37.9 percent) Howard County residents have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 77,435 people (23.8 percent) have been fully vaccinated. There have been 17,725 total coronavirus cases so far as of April 7 and there are 9,214 active cases. However, Howard County Health Officer Maura Rossman declared, "We are in a race between vaccine and variants." "Our COVID metrics continue to trend up. Today (April 4) our positivity rate is 5.86 percent and our new case rate is 20.22 per 100,000. Cases are predominantly among those not fully vaccinated. During the next two months as more residents become fully vaccinated, the cases should stabilize and trend down. Until that time, we must be diligent in continuing to wear facial coverings, physically distance, avoid large gatherings and get tested when we are exposed or develop symptoms," she said. The Howard County Health Department began scheduling vaccine appointments for all groups in Phase 1C March 22. All phases are eligible now to pre-register for vaccines.
