POINT PLEASANT BEACH – Two people have filed to run for election in the Point Pleasant Beach Council's Republican primary election in June. Will two sitting incumbents run against them? Two Republicans – Michael Ramos and Rosa Crowley have filed to run for election in the June 8 primary. No Democrats have filed. Both were endorsed by the local Republican club and will vie for two seats currently held by Bob Santanello – who switched from the GOP to the Libertarian Party – and Andy Cortes. "I am up for re-election and would like to continue to honestly, fairly and with an open mind serve the community again," Cortes wrote on Facebook last week. "I know you can't please everyone and some decisions aren't popular but with my election history, a lot of residents must feel I do a decent job. Myself and four others interviewed to be candidates and the Republican Club chose not to endorse me this year. I have come to a crossroad." The June 8 primary election in the Garden State will be primarily in-person, Gov. Phil Murphy has said. "All of our regularly operated polling places will be open for all voters who wish to cast their ballots on the voting machines," Murphy said at his COVID-19 briefing. This decision stands in stark contrast to last year's primarily vote-by-mail primary and general election. The much-maligned decision brought with it numerous allegations of voter fraud which were investigated and found to have no impact on any race results. New Jersey has the option for a mail-in ballot in the form of an absentee ballot for every election. Whether or not some of the changes, like the automatic mailing of ballots, that were part of last year's adjustments for COVID-19 will be repeated remains to be seen.
