Join us and learn about plants, animals and fungi on the islands! | Casey Trees x Friends of Kingman and Heritage Island Casey Trees and Friends of Kingman and Heritage Island are joining forces for the City Nature Challenge! Join us to learn about and catalog plants, animals and fungi on the islands using iNaturalist and SEEK. We will host "Outdoor Office Hours" in the meadow on Kingman Island to guide you on how to use the app, and how to identify species that live on the islands. *April 30-May 3rd is the global City Nature Challenge! The City Nature Challenge is a friendly competition among cities to see whose residents can spot and identify the most wild plants and animals. Observations will help scientists collect valuable data on biodiveristy in urban areas. And they’ll help the DC metro area win! Observations can be made through May 3rd. The identification period will continue through May 9th. See what we found on May 10th! Requirements   Registration. We require that you pre-register for our events so that you can fill out our waiver before arriving at the event. Youth Participants should be with an adult at all times. No specific skills required. Masks and social distancing are required. Dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather. Getting There Public Transportation: The closest Metro station is Stadium- Armory which is 1.1 miles from the planting site. The X1, X2, and X3 buses have stops on Benning road near the walking entrance to Heritage Island. Parking: A parking lot is available on site.
