I agree with the OP. BUT a few rules for the Host Musicians
1 Start on time. We know you’re going to do a few songs on your own before you turn the mic over to everyone else but the Longer you play the last time there is for everyone else.
2 if you’re keeping a sign-up sheet, then keep the sign-up sheet. Don’t skip over people because someone walks in that you like. Or gives you some BS excuse about they can only stay a while. That’s their problem.
3. If it’s a three song minimum keep it that way. Many times I’ve seen open mics “run out of time” because somebody got to do five songs. Let them come back at the end when you start your list over you want musicians to show up make sure you try to give everyone who wants to play a chance
3 The host/house band needs to know a lot of different songs. You need to be able to back up singers and other musicians. I’m not talking about obscure stuff. But I’ve seen singers want to do”Alright Now” And the host band doesn’t know it
