This 3-day intensive workshop covers compositional design when painting en plein air. This is an all media workshop about compositional design when painting en plein air. Students should have basic skills in the media of their choice and a basic plein air set up. Workshop Goals: Create strong landscape paintings with your own message. Learn to use compositional design tools in an efficient and logical manner to help you create a painting that actively engages the viewer. Composition is partially an intuitive process, but learning about the elements and principals will help students to create strong dynamic designs, analyze the compositional elements of masterworks, and study the theories of Arthur Wesley Dow, Edgar Payne and John Carlson. Learn to break down the landscape into manageable shapes, and planes.Learn to identify and keep your focal point during the painting process.Create dynamic paintings and have fun!Friday, July 9th - 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Introductory evening session at Artscope Studios in Yarmouth, ME Students will learn about compositional elements, painting analysis and the various composition theories. Students will practice creating compositional arrangements, notan's (shown below) and value studies in the Plein Air environment. Saturday, July 10th, 2021 - 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Students will create two plein air paintings today while focusing on creating engaging compositions. Two sites within the town of Yarmouth, Maine will be used, one featuring water views and the other featuring the beautiful historical side streets. Students will meet at 8:30 a.m. at Artascope for brief review and paint until 11:30 pm. The group will gather at 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to have a critique and further discussion and then an hour and a half break for lunch. Students will regroup at 2 p.m. to head to a new location. They will spend about an hour scouting out compositions and doing the preparation work to create a beautiful painting with their newfound knowledge. Class will regroup and discuss the compositional studies at 2:30 p.m. Students will then get to take advantage of late afternoon light painting from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The instructor will circulate and give lots of individual attention to each participant throughout the workshop. Deena will demonstrate the creative process she goes through to create landscape paintings that engage the viewer. Sunday, July 11th, 2021 - 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We will meet up at Artascope, and then move to a new location and immediately start painting to take advantage of morning light. Students should try to use all the design tools they now have in their pocket to improve the compositional structure of their painting. During the final hour of the workshop there will be a group critique of all the paintings created. $350 three-day workshop fee does not include materials. Ball is a nationally renowned landscape painter known for her innovative use of watercolor in combination with a textured ground and specialized surfaces. She received her BA in Art history and Studio Art from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and continued her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art and Tyler School of Art. Deena’s work is exhibited extensively throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, and can be found in issues of Watercolor Artist and the annual publications of the watercolor book, Splash.
