GLEN COVE, NY — About 50 Glen Cove residents were rescued from their apartments after high levels of carbon monoxide were detected between a block of buildings along Glen Street in the city's downtown commercial district early Tuesday morning, Glen Cove police said. Police said that at about 2:36 a.m., officers received a call for an activated carbon monoxide detector at 59 Glen St., and when they arrived, they saw smoke coming from a manhole at 69 Glen St. The Glen Cove Fire Department ended up detecting high levels of carbon monoxide in the buildings between both 59 and 69 Glen Street, police said. Three residents who were in "questionable condition" refused medical aid at the scene, and no one required medical attention, Det. Lt. John Nagle said. The displaced residents were brought to the Glen Cove Senior Center at the direction of Mayor Timothy Tenke, but Nagle could not say for sure how many. The residents spent the rest of the morning at the senior center until the fire department deemed the buildings safe for re-entry just before 10 a.m., according to Nagle "Everyone got the green light to go back in early this morning," he added. The cause of the carbon monoxide buildup has been determined as a "small electrical fire in an underground access area to the building" at 69 Glen St., according to Nagle.
