COLLEGE PARK, MD — Police said multiple drivers did donuts on Interstate-495 on Saturday. Officers explained that they eventually caught one of the suspects and fined him more than $1,800. The disruption blocked cars on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway near U.S. Route 1, a press release noted. The Prince George's County Police Department told troopers that the group fled to Maryland Route 212, the write-up informed. Officers then stated that they spotted an orange 2020 Dodge Charger driving recklessly on westbound Route 212 at Interstate 95. Police pulled the car over and alleged that it had altered temporary tags, hiding its true license plate number. Troopers identified the accused driver as 20-year-old Jonathan C. Iraheta of Beltsville. Officers mentioned that they "stored" his car pending an investigation. The incident report indicated that police wrote Iraheta tickets on these charges: Traveling 90 mph in a posted 35 mph zoneReckless drivingNegligent drivingAggressive drivingFollowing too closelyUnsafe lane change Officers previously shared that the coronavirus pandemic brought "super speeders" to Maryland roads. One driver even did donuts on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge last September. Troopers responded by announcing new speed traps across the state this March. "Obviously, driving behavior witnessed on the Capital Beltway and Rt. 212 yesterday is unlawful, dangerous and a complete disregard for the safety and convenience of others on the highway," troopers said in the release. "The Maryland State Police will continue to take immediate and strict enforcement action whenever possible when these incidents occur."
