Description
A monthly lecture and demonstration series focusing on the architecture of the city and the stories behind its master craftsmen. Join the Beauregard-Keyes house as we celebrate the craftsmanship and artistry of the master builders responsible for the architecture of New Orleans. We will be hosting a series of lectures and demonstrations over the course of the next six months highlighting trades such as plasterwork, ironwork, masonry, and carpentry. For our first event we welcome Jonn Hankins, co-founder and CEO of the New Orleans Master Crafts Guild. Jonn has been an advocate for the revival of the traditional building trades for over a decade since he directed “Raised to the Trade: Creole Building Arts of New Orleans” at NOMA, an award winning exhibition and oral history research project about the family legacies of the master craftsmen who built and maintain the built environment of New Orleans. In this talk, Jonn will introduce our series and go into detail about these artisans and why their work continues to stand the test of time. As a part of his lecture, Jonn will be leading a walking tour of the lower French Quarter starting at the Beauregard-Keyes house as he points out important architectural features. Space for the tour is limited and guests will be asked to choose a tour time either before or after the lecture. The first tour will start at 3pm, the lecture will start at 4:30pm, and the second tour will take place when the lecture is complete. Attendees must register in advance through Eventbrite. If you register, but are unable to attend, please cancel your ticket so others may join. Guests will be asked to remain socially distanced and are required to wear a mask. The lecture will also be live-streamed to our Facebook page. If you are unable to attend in person, watch from home!
